Kindergaten through 12th grade students residing at the Ouachita Children’s Center and pre-K through 4th grade students in the Hot Spring School District attend a summer learning camp, put on through a partnership of these two groups and the Hot Spring Family YMCA. The younger students receive intensive literacy instruction blended with music, dance, and STEM activities. The YMCA offers “clubs” focusing on arts, yoga, cooking, gardening, and sports. In 2016:

  • 200 students attended—20 students from Ouachita Children’s Center and 180 from Hot Springs School District
  • An overwhelming majority (79 percent) of K through 4th grade students had an increase on the Development Reading Assessment. More than half (61 percent) also increased their writing skills.
