Incoming 1st and 2nd grade students participate in a six-week Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program put on by Hot Springs Family YMCA in partnership with Lakeside Primary School. The program uses an evidence-based model developed by YUSA, combining literacy and enrichment activities. The Four Blocks Literacy Model focuses on guided reading, self-selected reading, working with words, and writing and the enrichment activities include field trips, yoga, STEM, drama, and global learning. In 2016:
- Thirty-two incoming 1st and 2nd grade students participated in the program.
- Rising first graders moved from a .9 grade level equivalent to 1.3 on the STAR Early Literacy Assessment, while rising second graders increased from 1.3 to 1.4.
