In Springdale, a community with a growing number of Latino and Marshallese families, OneCommunity Reads, UnaComunidad Leyendo! empowers parents and children to build their literacy skills.
Since 2013, 230 families have participated in Parents Taking Leadership Action (PTLA), which aims to strengthen parent-school communication, increase educational awareness, and enhance the leadership of newcomers. The PTLA initiative complements the Springdale School District’s Family Literacy Program, which allows parents to spend 10 hours a week in their child’s school learning English, spending time in their child’s classroom, and learning about community resources. Through community-wide partnerships, Springdale has reduced chronic absenteeism rates by nearly 70 percent at Monitor and Parson Hills Elementary schools.
In 2016 and 2017, Springdale was named a Pacesetter by the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. And in June 2017, the City of Springdale earned the prestigious All-America City Award for its community-wide civic engagement efforts to help more young children achieve grade-level reading proficiency and early school success. Springdale was one of just 15 communities nationwide to win the award from the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and the National Civic League.
