In Marvell and Elaine, the Boys, Girls, Adults Community Development Center (BGACDC), Marvell-Elaine Elementary School, and local volunteers are strengthening community-wide efforts to increase the number of students reading proficiently.
Through Marvell-Elaine Reads, about 50 local children have attended a six-week summer learning day camp. By combining BGACDC’s Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School and Marvell-Elaine Elementary’s summer school programs, the camp provided high-quality instruction that builds literacy skills, connects with local culture, and offers community service and social awareness-building activities. Marvell-Elaine Elementary School also significantly reduced its chronic absence rate from 18 percent to 7 percent by creating a warm, welcoming school climate and reaching out positively and proactively to parents.
In 2016 and 2017, Marvell-Elaine Reads was named a Pacesetter by the National Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.
