Eudora Reads, an initiative led by a coalition of residents, is undertaking multiple solutions to ensure that all local children read proficiently by the end of third grade. They have provided quality summer and after school learning opportunities to an annual average of 118 students and have distributed over 1,000 books to young children through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. They recently launched the Parent Mentor Program, which places parents in the classroom and trains them for leadership roles in the community.
Eudora partnered with AR-GLR in 2016-2017 to pilot Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read Sing, a parent engagement and public awareness campaign designed to empower parents and caregivers to talk, read, sing and play with children from birth. Families received subscriptions to Ready Rosie and materials including handouts, bibs, placemats, and magnets with messages aimed to increase interactions with young children.
