Raising the Standard for Early Education in Arkansas
An important step was taken to increase the quality of early childhood education in 2016 with the release of the Arkansas Child Development and Early Learning Standards by the Arkansas Department of Human Services and Arkansas Head Start State Collaboration Office.
Parson Hills Elementary School in Springdale has always embraced a ﾓwhole childﾔ approach to educating its students. The school’s increased focus on attendance has recently led to a drop in the schoolﾒs chronic absence rate from 14.9 percent of students in 2012-13 to 5 percent in 2014-15.
With strong leadership from the principal and committed teachers and staff, Marvell-Elaine brought down its chronic absence rate from 18% to 7% – and today, 75% of the students recently scored as proficient in reading on statewide exams.
