Summertime is almost here! Throughout the summer, many students lose as much two to three months of reading skills. Known as the “summer slide,” this learning loss can leave children up to three years behind their peers by the end of fifth grade. However, the summer slide can be prevented by keeping students engaged during the summer.
In partnership with AR-GLR, Arkansas Community Foundation awarded $163,550 to seven summer learning programs for their Summer Learning Initiative. The Summer Learning Initiative funds summer learning programs across the state to combat summer learning loss. The 2018 grantees are Booneville School District, Brandon House Cultural & Performing Arts Center in Little Rock, Clinton School District, Drew Central Elementary School in Monticello, Horatio Elementary School, Life Skills for Youth in Little Rock and North Little Rock School District.
